Disc In and Erasmus+: Using Sport to Promote Inclusion, Education and European Cooperation

Since 2024, Disc In has been developing European projects that use ultimate frisbee as a tool for education, intercultural exchange and social inclusion. Through the Erasmus+ programme, our Grenoble-based association enables young people, volunteers and sports educators to discover different cultures, exchange practices and work together towards making sport more accessible and inclusive.

From Italy to Belgium, through Germany, Spain, Austria and the French Alps, these projects share a common ambition: to make sport a space where everyone can find their place, take responsibility and learn from others.

Between 2023 and 2025, five projects coordinated by Disc In were awarded Erasmus+ funding, leading to several European mobility activities carried out between 2024 and 2026. These initiatives fall under two complementary areas of the programme: Erasmus+ Sport and Erasmus+ Youth.

2024 – Development and Promotion of Women’s and Junior Ultimate Frisbee

Erasmus+ Sport – KA182 | Mobility of Sport Staff

Countries: Italy and Belgium | Completed project

Our first Erasmus+ mobility project aimed to explore how two leading European clubs develop ultimate frisbee, particularly among women and young players.

Two 15-day mobility activities were organised:

  • Bologna, Italy – 13–27 April 2024: A visit to BFD Bologna and its women’s team, Shout, to observe training sessions, exchange ideas with coaches and sports managers, and discover the club’s organisational structure.
  • Ghent, Belgium – 7–21 December 2024: An immersion experience with Gentle Ultimate, a club strongly committed to junior development and structured volunteer coaching.

These mobility activities provided opportunities to study different approaches to coach education, youth development, player retention and club management.

Making European Knowledge Accessible to Everyone

To share the knowledge gained beyond the mobility participants, Disc In produced two documentaries presenting the practices of the clubs visited.

These films feature interviews with coaches, players and club representatives, giving other European organisations the opportunity to discover different approaches and identify practices they could adapt to their own environments.

This first project strengthened our ability to observe, document and share European sporting practices. It also contributed to building a network of European partners for future exchanges.

2025 – Ultimate Unity: Intercultural Exchange and Education Through Sport

Erasmus+ Youth – KA152 | Youth Exchange

Countries: France, Spain and Italy | Completed project

From 16 to 23 August 2025, Disc In organised a European youth exchange in Courchevel, bringing together 24 young people aged 14 to 17, supported by three group leaders and three accompanying adults.

The project was developed in cooperation with three organisations:

  • Disc In, France;
  • Frisbillanas, Seville, Spain;
  • Chimera, Italy.

With logistical support from FOL73, participants experienced eight days of shared living and activities based on non-formal education.

Learning to Live and Make Decisions Together

Ultimate frisbee was the central activity of the exchange. Through its self-officiating system and the principles of Spirit of the Game, the sport provided opportunities to develop communication, active listening, conflict resolution and cooperation.

However, the project went far beyond sport. Participants also took part in artistic workshops, hiking, environmental discussions, intercultural evenings and collective reflection activities.

Activities were deliberately organised in mixed-nationality groups to encourage communication in different languages, mutual support and the discovery of different cultural habits.

Particular attention was given to accessibility and inclusion: six young people with fewer opportunities participated in the exchange, with support adapted to their individual needs.

Developing Skills Beyond the Playing Field

The experience helped participants develop valuable life skills, including self-confidence, independence, public speaking, teamwork in an intercultural environment and collaborative problem-solving.

Young people also contributed to artistic creations and an activity journal documenting their European experience.

The project’s final report received an evaluation score of 92/100, recognising the quality of the work carried out.

2026 – Ultimate for Inclusion: Breaking Down Social Barriers Through Team Sport

Erasmus+ Sport – KA182 | Mobility of Sport Staff

Countries: France and Germany | Completed project

In April 2026, eight members of Disc In travelled to Berlin for a professional learning experience hosted by Turngemeinde in Berlin 1848 e.V. and its ultimate frisbee teams, Wall City and Jinx.

From 9 to 23 April, participants observed training sessions and club organisation, interviewed local representatives and analysed the inclusion practices implemented within these sporting communities.

The objective was to look beyond sporting performance and understand how a club can become a welcoming environment that promotes engagement, solidarity and equal opportunities.

Understanding and Reducing Barriers to Participation

The mobility focused on several important issues: financial accessibility, welcoming new players, developing women’s ultimate, volunteer involvement and opportunities to take responsibility within teams.

Observing the Berlin clubs allowed participants to discover initiatives that encourage solidarity, community engagement and different approaches to female leadership.

All eight participants actively contributed to documenting the experience through interviews, photographs, videos and observation notes.

Turning Experience into Resources for Other Clubs

An initial group presentation was organised in Grenoble on 6 May 2026 to share the lessons learned during the mobility.

The observations collected provide a foundation for educational and audiovisual resources addressing welcoming practices, gender equality, inclusion and volunteer organisation.

Our ambition is to ensure that these learning outcomes benefit not only Disc In but also other clubs seeking to make their activities more accessible.

2026 – Mountains of Flavours, Arts and Games

Erasmus+ Youth – KA152 | Youth Exchange

Countries: France, Italy and Austria | Exchange completed in 2026

From 5 to 14 July 2026, thirty teenagers from France, Italy and Austria gathered in Courchevel for a European experience combining cooking, art, sport and mountain activities.

Coordinated by Disc In in partnership with A.S.D. Chimera from Italy and UNION Frisbeeclub Mosquitos Klosterneuburg from Austria, this project offered a different way of learning about one another and developing cooperation.

Each country was represented by ten participants aged 13 to 17. The group included 16 girls and 14 boys, with 15 young people facing fewer opportunities.

Cooking, Art and Sport as Universal Languages

Participants explored European cultures by preparing vegetarian recipes together, taking part in artistic workshops and engaging in cooperative sports activities.

Self-officiated ultimate frisbee was used to develop active listening and conflict resolution. Cooking workshops provided opportunities to address shared responsibilities, food traditions, hygiene and food waste reduction.

A collective artwork, improvisation workshops, hiking, a night spent camping and intercultural evenings further enriched the experience.

The project placed strong emphasis on youth participation: participants helped prepare meals, lead activities, translate for one another and reflect daily on their experiences within the group.

An Inclusive and Environmentally Responsible Exchange

A preparatory visit was organised in Vienna in April 2026 to develop the programme with the partners and anticipate participants’ needs.

Environmental responsibility was integrated into the activities through train travel whenever possible, sustainable cooking practices, waste management and awareness of the mountain environment.

At the end of the exchange, all thirty young people received a Youthpass certificate, recognising the competences they had developed through non-formal learning.

The project also resulted in artistic creations, photographs and digital content produced with the participants, enabling them to share their experiences with the communities of all three partner organisations.

2026 – Voices in Play: Giving Young People a Say in Decision-Making

Erasmus+ Youth – KA154 | Youth Participation Activities

Ongoing European project

Through Voices in Play (Voix en jeu), Disc In is developing a new dimension of its Erasmus+ activities: enabling young people to participate directly in decisions affecting their sporting and community experiences.

The project focuses on three complementary challenges: improving how new members are welcomed, strengthening inclusion within teams and learning to manage disagreements constructively.

In a self-officiated sport like ultimate frisbee, players are already expected to communicate, listen to different perspectives and find solutions together. Voices in Play aims to extend these competences beyond the playing field.

European Meetings to Experiment and Learn

The project combines local workshops with several international meetings.

A first meeting in Berlin in April 2026 provided opportunities to explore mediation, public speaking and female leadership. Participants notably developed a simple conflict-resolution framework: STOP – LISTEN – DECIDE.

A second gathering, held in Courchevel from 8 to 11 July 2026, continued the discussions on welcoming practices and inclusion, actively involving young people in developing possible improvements.

A final meeting is planned in Ghent in October 2026, where participants will continue testing ideas and consolidate the tools developed collectively.

Tools Created by Young People, for Young People

The project aims to produce resources that can be used by clubs and youth organisations across Europe, including newcomer onboarding pathways, recommendations for inclusive participation, mediation tools and short educational materials.

The objective is not simply to consult young people, but to give them genuine opportunities to propose ideas, discuss solutions and implement concrete changes within their organisations.

This approach contributes to active citizenship and democratic participation, two essential dimensions of the Erasmus+ Youth programme.

Shared Commitments Across All Our European Projects

Despite the diversity of participants, countries and activities, Disc In’s Erasmus+ projects are built around several shared principles.

Inclusion and equal opportunities. We aim to reduce economic, social, cultural and linguistic barriers so that more people can benefit from European learning experiences. We also pay particular attention to women’s participation and gender equality.

Learning through experience. Our activities are based on non-formal education: participants learn by doing, exchanging ideas, experimenting and collectively reflecting on their experiences.

Active youth participation. We encourage young people to express their opinions, contribute to decisions and gradually take on greater responsibilities within their groups and organisations.

Environmental responsibility. We seek to integrate more sustainable practices into travel arrangements, meals, activities and the overall organisation of our exchanges.

Dissemination and sharing of results. Our documentaries, educational resources, publications and presentations aim to make learning outcomes accessible beyond the direct participants, particularly to sports clubs, educators, associations and youth organisations.

Building a Sustainable European Network

These experiences have enabled Disc In to develop partnerships in France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany and Austria.

Each project builds on the lessons learned from previous experiences. Sport staff mobilities improve coaching and organisational practices, youth exchanges enrich educational methods, and youth participation projects create more opportunities for young people to contribute to decision-making within their associations.

Our ambition is to continue developing these partnerships and sharing the resources produced with organisations interested in using sport as a tool for education and inclusion.

For Disc In, Erasmus+ is much more than an opportunity to travel: it is a way to create lasting improvements in sporting and educational practices by learning from one another across Europe.
